Ric Flair

from Crooked Songs by Rance Garrison

about

Recording while hanging out, as I often did, with three of my best friends, Josh Ely, Joe Fultz, and Keaton Lawson, in that little windowless apartment where half the songs on Lonesome Highway were recorded and where the majority of the songs on this album were recorded as well. We were nineteen, twenty. Had some beer and thought we were cool even though we were nerds.

I stole the chorus to this song from the sixteen time heavyweight wrestling champion Ric Flair's motto, and of course, the song is named for him. Came up with the tune while mowing my girlfriend's yard. Finished writing the lyrics a few days later and recorded it with my buddies. It was a fun experience. Joe suggested that we come up with a band name. Three of us were heavy smokers at the time, so he suggested The Chain Smokers.

I thought it was a cool name, even though we were never really a band.

lyrics

Sittin' on the porch a cigarette in my hand
All ready feeling like an old man
World's gonna explode I tell you it's true
Don't believe me baby if you don't want to
I walk my hometown on the railroad tracks
Seems like I'm getting a little too relaxed
Gotta do something turn it all around
If I'm your lover baby make a sound

I'm gonna be a jet flying limousine riding kiss stealing wheeling dealing son of a gun just like Ric Flair.

You know your heroes are dead in their graves
It's the only thing from which none of us are safe
Drive your car stay up all night
Come with me into the moonlight
Laugh your ass off like a lunatic
They're lining up so you can take your pick
Which ones are we gonna destroy?
Tell me who is gonna be your toy?

I'm gonna be a jet flying limousine riding kiss stealing wheeling dealing son of a gun just like Ric Flair.

I'm smoking Marlboros in the flip top box
Look at that girl, man, she's a real fox
Gonna get in my car and drive drive drive
I'll be back tomorrow if I can make it back alive

I'm gonna be a jet flying limousine riding kiss stealing wheeling dealing son of a gun just like Ric Flair.
